Supporting independent media means defending our right to information ✊📢 What’s happening in Hungary right now is alarming, and it should be a wake-up call for all European democracies. A silent protest took place yesterday in Budapest, ahead of a mid-june vote on a draft of law proposed by Viktor Orbán’s government. This law directly targets media outlets and NGOs receiving “foreign funding”, including donations from Hungarian citizens living abroad or European grants. Why ? Silence independent voices, particularly 444.hu, one of Hungary’s last remaining free newsrooms, known for its investigative work. Through the Sphera Network, a coalition of independent media across Europe, a campaign is underway.
